Science
Curriculum Intent: Science
Possibilities - To have high aspirations and know all of the opportunities available to them.
Growth - To recognise and celebrate their own individual journey, understanding their own uniqueness and strengths and those of others.
Communication - To have high levels of oracy; having a rich and wide vocabulary to be able to explain their own ideas and thinking and be able to collaborate and respond to others.
Whole school Curriculum vision for Science |
|
Possibilities To have high aspirations |
Children will be aware of the importance of science and the different careers that are open to them which have a link to science and different investigations. Children will be inspired by their learning and texts that they read throughout their topics. |
Growth To recognise and celebrate their own individual journey |
Children will be given opportunities to recap previous learning and then use this knowledge to support their new learning. Children will discuss with adults in school and also their peers ways in which they have shown their new learning and celebrate this within the classroom and in whole school celebrations for each scientific topic. |
Communication To have high levels of oracy |
Children will be exposed to and encouraged to use new vocabulary linked to their scientific topics, both in their writing and when in discussions. They will be given opportunities to discuss scientific topics and phenomena and celebrated in their use of their learned vocabulary. |
Implementation:
Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding into the following threshold concepts:
- Working scientifically
- Understanding Biology
- Understanding Chemistry
- Understanding Physics
These key concepts underpin the children’s learning through the year groups from Reception to Year 2. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.
Threshold Concepts |
End Point |
Threshold Concept 1: Working Scientifically |
By the end of year 2... at The Avenue Infant School, children will be able to identify what skills are needed and used to answer scientific questions and use the appropriate vocabulary to explain to others the results of investigations they have carried out and observations they have made. Children will have learnt about animals including humans as well as plants and what is important for their survival. A range of materials and their properties will be explored and children will also learn about the different forces and what can affect them and the four seasons will be explored in great depth.

Threshold Concept 2: Understanding biology |
|
Threshold Concept 3: Understanding chemistry |
|
Threshold Concept 4: Understanding physics |

Assessment
Through the explicit teaching of the Science knowledge and skills, both the teachers and the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. Our assessment systems enable teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of their learning and the progress they have made over time.
Pupil Voice
"Science is when you make potions and stuff and learning about making potions.”
“Learning about stuff”
“Science is when you do experiments and stuff”
“Science makes me happy”
