Whole school curriculum vision for Art |
|
Possibilities To have high aspirations |
Pupils develop their artistic skills through a skills based curriculum which enables them to discover their creative interests. Pupils see that art is a cross-curricular subject which can be applied in different forms, including technology, which may inspire their future learning and employment. |
Growth To recognise and celebrate their own individual journey |
Through exploring different artists and media, pupils discover their artistic style. They learn to express themselves through artistic media and by sharing their work pupils grow in confidence and value their own contributions and those of others. |
Communication To have high levels of oracy |
Pupils have the opportunity to explore and share their ideas and opinions about different artists and their work. They learn how to listen to and value the opinion of others and use these skills to appraise their artwork. |
Implementation:
Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding into the following threshold concepts:
- Experiment, invent and create (own works of art, craft and design)
- Artistic techniques
- Great artists, craft makers and designers
- Artistic communication
These key concepts underpin the children’s learning through the year groups from Reception to Year 2. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.
The vertical accumulation of knowledge and skills from Years R to 2 is mapped as follows:

Assessment
Through the explicit teaching of the Art and Design, both the teachers and the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. Our assessment systems enable teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of their learning and the progress they have made over time.
